The Needles

The red and white rock pinnacles are visible throughout the whole district, mixed with other rock formations like potholes, arches, spires, and domes. This area also features a special rock formation called hoodoos. The hoodoos are flat-topped spires created as relatively soft strata erode below a more erosion-resistant cap rock. These hoodoos range from tens to hundreds of feet tall.

Starting either at Mohab or Monticello, drive towards the Needles district using 191 and then exit onto 211. Once you have passed Newspaper Rock after about 12 miles, you will see the first rock formations, most of them to your left. The Needles visitor center is located close to the park entrance, about 22 miles after you have passed Newspaper Rock.
